Hello, My name is Dax. I am a mixed media artist based in Bellevue, Nebraska. I express

my artistic visions in a variety of ways; drawing with pencils and inks, painting with

acrylics and used latex house paints, and constructing hand-carved frames, sculptures,

and pallet furniture from salvaged lumber and scrap wood. I have been a member of the

Omaha Artists' Cooperative Gallery since 2014, displaying new works monthly, and was

the winner of their Emerging Artists Competition in Summer of 2014.

I have pursued Art in some form or another for most of my life, and my influences are many. I’ve spent my life in the Midwest, and as a boy growing up in a small town in South Dakota, I was moved by the vast, stark plains; enormous skies, endless green fields, the wild beauty of a tornado or a snowstorm. Even now, I carry this powerful imagery in my heart and use it in some of what I do. As I grew up, I became fascinated by the art form of comic books, from the primary-colored worlds of superheros to the noir black-and-white of independant books. Today, their influence persists in my creative endevors. As a angst-filled teenager, I immersed myself in hardcore punk music and the DIY style and ethic it championed. At present, I still take that ethic to heart through my use of used materials and my self-taught “geurilla” woodworking style. In my adulthood, I’ve come to appreciate the lessens of the past, the splendor of the natural world, and the wonders of our age. From this, I find constant inspiration in Architecture, Science, and History. And the list could go on and on. I’ve taken these influences, brewed them in my brain over a lifetime, tested them in my lab, and begun to produce works that I feel display my unique perspective as an artist.

With so many influences banging around in my head, my works reflect a diverse range of subjects. However, there is one thing I strive to be consistent with, that being the use of salvaged lumber and refuse furniture in creating my pieces. In salvaging and using these materials, I am striving to, not only bring awareness to the wastefulness of modern society, but to also celebrate these forgotten pieces of our lives. In using old floorboards from a remodeled house, or in taking an old baby crib and using it to create a carved picture frame, I want the viewer to contemplate that these things once had a different life. There was once a child that slept in that crib, those old boards once graced a dining room floor that felt the tread of a million steps. It is my way of saying that in a world where we are so quick to abandon the old for the new, there are things in that are not, and should never be, disposable. Additionally, I feel it is a small part I can play in the future of our world, eliminating just a miniscule fraction of waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

I hope you enjoy looking at my work. If you have any questions or inquiries regarding my work, or anything you've read, please feel free to contact me. I am always happy to help. I am also happy to take commissions, but serious inquiries only, please.
